I'll Show You the Agra Tourists Never See

I've lived in Agra my whole life. These aren't generic guidebook itineraries — they're the routes I personally walk with visitors, updated every season.

Why I Still Love Showing People My City

People ask me if I ever get tired of the Taj Mahal. Honestly? Never. I've watched it glow pink at dawn, turn golden at sunset, and shimmer under a full moon. Every visit shows me something new — and watching a first-time visitor's face when they see it through the Great Gate never gets old.

But Agra is so much more than one monument. The Mughal food scene alone is worth the trip. The history in Agra Fort will break your heart. And Fatehpur Sikri — an entire city abandoned in a single night — is one of the most eerie, beautiful places I've ever walked through.

  • 3 UNESCO World Heritage Sites within 40 km
  • Under 2 hours from Delhi by Gatimaan Express, and just a scenic drive to Jaipur
  • Mughlai cuisine at its source — petha, bedai, kebabs you can't find anywhere else
  • Marble artisans still using the same techniques from the 1600s

What Readers Say

Priya's 1-day itinerary saved our trip. We saw the Taj at sunrise without any crowds thanks to her East Gate tip.

We almost fell for the "marble workshop" scam until we read her warnings. The food spots she recommended were incredible.

As a solo traveler, her Fatehpur Sikri guide made me feel confident exploring on my own. The shared auto tip saved me thousands.

Locals know things guidebooks don't. Priya's sunset spot at Mehtab Bagh was the highlight of our Golden Triangle tour.

The crowd calendar alone was worth bookmarking. We visited in September on her advice and had the Taj practically to ourselves.

Do This, Skip That

Honest recommendations from someone who lives here

Do This

  • Visit Mehtab Bagh at sunset for the best Taj Mahal view (and no entry fee for the view)
  • Eat petha from Panchhi Petha near Sadar Bazaar, not the tourist-trap shops at Taj Gate
  • Take the Gatimaan Express from Delhi — under 2 hours and includes breakfast
  • Enter Taj Mahal from the East Gate — shortest queues, even in peak season
  • Try bedai-jalebi for breakfast at a local dhaba — this is the real Agra food experience

Skip That

  • The overpriced camel rides outside the Taj — you'll find better photo ops inside
  • "Free" marble workshops that pressure you into buying — they get commission from your taxi driver
  • Visiting on Friday — Taj Mahal is closed for prayers
  • Midday visits in summer — 40°C+ heat makes the marble platform unbearable on bare feet
  • Hotel-arranged guides at 5x the price — ASI guides at the gate are ₹200-500 and just as good

October to March is best. I always tell people: avoid April-June unless you enjoy 45°C heat. Read my full breakdown
