Fatehpur Sikri is the place I take visitors when they want to understand Mughal India beyond the Taj Mahal. An entire imperial capital, built by Akbar at the height of his power, then abandoned after just 14 years when the wells and lake ran dry. The stonework is still razor-sharp after 450 years — carved red sandstone that shifts from amber to deep rust as the morning light moves across it. It's one of the most impressive Mughal sites I know, and criminally undervisited compared to the Taj.

Priya's insider tip: Go early morning before the tour buses arrive from Jaipur (usually by 10 AM). Shared autos run from both Idgah Bus Stand and Agra Fort Bus Stand for ₹120-150 per person — the hotel-arranged cars charge three times more. And a heads up: at the Jama Masjid entrance, unofficial guides will attach themselves to you and demand payment later. Politely say no at the gate. If you want a guide, hire an ASI-approved one at the palace ticket counter instead.

Two Separate Entrances — Don't Get Confused

This catches out nearly every first-time visitor. Fatehpur Sikri has two separate areas with different entrances on opposite sides of the ridge:

  • Palace Complex (ticketed) — enter from the upper road near the parking area. This is where you buy your ticket (₹75/₹750). Includes Diwan-i-Am, Panch Mahal, Diwan-i-Khas, and the royal quarters.
  • Jama Masjid & Salim Chishti's Tomb (free) — enter through the Buland Darwaza at the bottom of the hill. Remove shoes before entering (carry socks — the stone floor gets scorching hot by 10 AM).

Start with the palace, then walk downhill to the mosque. Going the other way means climbing in the heat.

Suggested Itinerary

7:00 AM — Depart from Agra

Leave early to beat the heat and crowds. Carry at least 1 litre of water — there is nothing to buy inside the palace complex.

8:00 AM — Palace Complex (ticketed)

Start here while it's cool. Walk through Diwan-i-Am → Pachisi Court → Panch Mahal (climb for views) → Diwan-i-Khas, where Akbar held his famous interfaith debates between Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Jain, and Zoroastrian scholars.

10:00 AM — Jama Masjid & Salim Chishti's Tomb (free)

Walk downhill to the Buland Darwaza entrance. Remove shoes (carry socks — the stone is hot by now). The marble lattice screens at Salim Chishti's tomb are some of the finest Mughal craftsmanship anywhere.

11:30 AM — Wrap Up & Grab Chai

Tea stalls and snack shops near the Jama Masjid exit. Then head back to Agra — you'll arrive by 12:30-1:00 PM, in time for lunch and afternoon sightseeing.

Tips for Your Visit

  • Located 37 km from Agra — allow 1 hour travel time each way
  • Start with the palace complex (ticketed), then walk downhill to the Jama Masjid (free) — going uphill in the heat is brutal
  • Carry at least 1 litre of water per person — there is zero food or water inside the palace complex
  • Bring socks for the Jama Masjid — shoes must be removed and the stone floor gets scorching hot after 10 AM
  • Buland Darwaza is 54 metres tall — one of the highest gateways in the world. Best photographed from below in the morning light
  • Say no firmly to unofficial guides at the Jama Masjid gate — hire ASI-approved guides at the palace ticket counter if you want one
